The 2016 Road Glide Special is a premium bagger featuring the frame-mounted 'shark-nose' fairing and the High Output Twin Cam 103 engine. As part of the Project RUSHMORE era, it includes significant ergonomic and technological upgrades over previous generations, such as one-touch saddlebag latches and improved aerodynamics. For 2016, it received a narrower primary housing and derby cover to improve rider leg reach to the ground.

- Boom!™ Box 6.5 GT — 6.5-inch full-color touchscreen with GPS navigation and Bluetooth, replacing the 4.3-inch non-touch unit on the base model.
- Reflex™ Linked Brakes with ABS — Electronic linking of front and rear brakes; standard on Special, optional on base.
- Premium Rear Suspension — Hand-adjustable low-profile rear shocks instead of the base model's air-adjustable shocks.
- Gloss Black Inner Fairing — The inner fairing is painted gloss black (or color-matched) rather than the matte/textured plastic on the base model.
- Enforcer Cast Aluminum Wheels — 19-inch front and 16-inch rear wheels with a specific 5-spoke design.
